Announcement About Tenure-track Faculty Probationary Period

Dear Colleagues,

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in significant disruption and created extraordinary demands on the faculty, all tenure-track faculty at the University of Illinois may apply to add an additional year to their tenure clock. The framework for this policy, as outlined by the University of Illinois System, is the following:

• An extension of the probationary period due to the COVID-19 virus will be allowed, with appropriate review/consultation and signatures of approval
• Approval should be generously granted under these circumstances
• In contrast to what is normal practice, those in the final year during which a tenure decision will be made are eligible to apply for this extension.

The deadlines for UIC faculty to submit for this extension of the probationary period and further explanation of the policy will be communicated in the very near future.

Thank you once more for your hard work and dedication to UIC.

Sincerely,

Susan Poser
Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Robert Barish
Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs
